Tirzepatide
A dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist prescribed for chronic weight management, delivered as a once-weekly injection.
Boxed Warning
Tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodent studies. It is not known whether tirzepatide causes such tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans. Do not use tirzepatide if you or a family member has ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is a prescription medicine that activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors to help regulate appetite and blood sugar. It is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults who meet clinical criteria. It is not for people with type 1 diabetes and has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis.
Do not use Tirzepatide if…
- you or a family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- you have had a serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients
Warnings & precautions
- Possible thyroid tumors — tell your provider about a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath.
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) — stop use and seek care for severe, persistent abdominal pain that may spread to the back.
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if used with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
- Kidney problems, which can result from dehydration caused by nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
- Gallbladder problems, including gallstones.
- Serious allergic reactions — seek care for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing.
- Changes in vision (diabetic retinopathy) in people with type 2 diabetes.
- Depression or thoughts of self-harm — tell your provider about any changes in mood or behavior.
Common side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion and abdominal pain. These are usually mild and often ease over time.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Tirzepatide is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Tirzepatide may reduce the effectiveness of oral birth control.
